A new chapter: PYNSW’s renewed vision unveiled at PY Annual Forum 2025

  • Emma Moxham
  • April 3, 2025

As the Zoom room filled with kids and youth leaders, ministry workers, volunteers, and members of the PY Committee, the PY Annual Forum 2025 began. Attendees gathered to reflect on the past year, consider progress, and plan for the future of PYNSW.

After opening in prayer, the evening kicked off with an update on key developments. But the real highlight was the unveiling of PYNSW’s refined vision statement and tagline—a fresh articulation of the heart behind the mission.

A renewed vision for the future

Since 1872, PYNSW (formerly the Presbyterian Fellowship Union and The Presbyterian Fellowship of Australia in NSW) has worked to equip the church to disciple youth for Christ.

Now, after an in-depth research process and strategic development in 2024, PYNSW has a renewed focus and a sharpened vision:

“To see Presbyterian Churches in NSW filled with children and youth who know, follow, love, and share Jesus, actively participating in the life of the church.”

This vision reflects a deep commitment to long-term discipleship—not just through events or programs, but by ensuring that children and teenagers alike are meaningfully integrated into the life of their local church.

To reinforce this direction, PYNSW also launched a new tagline:

“Your partner in discipling children and youth for Christ.”

Simple yet powerful, the tagline encapsulates PYNSW’s commitment to walking alongside churches, supporting them as they disciple children and youth for Christ.

Reflections on 2024

Before looking ahead with this vision, the forum took time to reflect on the past year. Dave Phillips, General Manager of PYNSW, outlined both the successes and challenges of 2024, painting a picture of a ministry that is growing, adapting, and responding to new opportunities.

One of the standout highlights was the growth in regional engagement, with new and strengthened PY camps in the Northern Rivers, Mid North Coast, Northern Inland, Hunter, and Southern Rivers. These events not only provided valuable discipleship opportunities but also strengthened relationships between youth groups and churches across NSW.

Meanwhile, networking efforts expanded, with PY Encourage events in Chatswood and Penrith providing spaces for youth leaders to connect, share insights, and sharpen one another in ministry. The Summer Camp 2024 (SC24) saw a 20% increase in attendance year-over-year—a remarkable sign of God’s work in drawing young people to himself.

Yet, challenges remain. Financially, PYNSW reported a sub-$45k loss, highlighting the need for increased fundraising efforts to sustain and expand its mission. One significant impact was that Network Coordinator Juli Secker had to conclude her role due to funding shortfalls.

2025 and beyond

With the lessons of 2024 in mind, Dave shared some of PYNSW’s plans for 2025, including:

  • A stronger regional focus, with Presbytery tours and increased visits to youth groups.
  • PY Encourage Sydney returning to Christ College on June 14, designed to equip and inspire youth leaders.
  • A call for churches to partner with PYNSW, particularly through hosting PY Encourage Express events to further networking and training in their region.
  • Ongoing investment in training, including the Lead for Life internship, Timothy Partnership Certificate, and Special Religious Education (SRE).
  • A continued investment in the Japan Mission Vision Trip—a unique opportunity for cross-cultural mission exposure for young adults.
  • A renewed push for fundraising, recognising the growing needs and opportunities before PYNSW.

But the forum wasn’t just about reflection and vision casting—it was also about action. In break-out sessions, attendees discussed practical ways to strengthen church partnerships, improve training for kids and youth leaders, and engage with pressing cultural issues.

The message that emerged was clear: God is at work, and PYNSW has a vital role to play in seeing more young people come to know, follow, love, and share Jesus.

As the night closed in prayer, there was a renewed sense of purpose. With this refined vision and clear direction, PYNSW stands ready to partner with local churches in discipling children and youth for Christ.
