The Timothy Partnership Certificate (TPC) is tailored to equip Christians at all stages of life—whether parents, students, or working professionals—with the tools to deepen their understanding of God’s Word and serve effectively in various ministry contexts.
Delivered in partnership between Presbyterian Youth NSW (PYNSW) and Christ College, the certificate offers two distinct streams: the Certificate of Theology (CertTheol) and the Academic Studies in Theology Certificate (ASTC).
What is the Timothy Partnership Certificate?
The CertTheol allows a student to study a range of topics at a fairly simple level, offering units that delve into biblical and theological topics. It is ideal for those starting out in their exploration of theological education without additional preparatory courses.
In contrast, the ASTC includes foundational units like “Introducing Study Skills” (ISS) and “Developing Study Skills” (DSS), which are designed to help students who are new to tertiary-level education or returning to study after a break. These introductory units teach essential skills like time management, exegetical note-taking, and effective study habits.
As they are studying a bridging course for further theological study, ASTC students can apply for AUSTUDY/Youth Allowance. In order to be eligible for AUSTUDY/Youth Allowance, a student must undertake at least 75% of a full time load to qualify, and these allowances are means-tested. Many MTS apprentices choose to engage in this.
The flexibility of both being online learning allows students to engage with the material at their own pace, making it accessible for those with demanding or unpredictable schedules.
What are the benefits of the Timothy Partnership Certificate?
- Flexibility and accessibility: One of the standout features of the TPC is its online format. Students can access course materials through a user-friendly Moodle platform, allowing them to study wherever and whenever it suits them. This is particularly beneficial for those juggling ministry responsibilities, work, or family commitments.
- Beginner-friendly content: The inclusion of introductory study skills courses makes the ASTC stream especially approachable for people with little or no previous experience in tertiary education. High school students, aspiring youth leaders, or individuals beginning ministry apprenticeships find these courses invaluable in building confidence and competence.
- Integration of theology and practical ministry: The TPC doesn’t just impart head knowledge. Its curriculum is designed to help students faithfully handle Scripture and apply it to real-life ministry situations. Units focus on practical theology, effective reflection in ministry, and the integration of prayer into tasks like sermon preparation, ensuring a holistic approach to learning.
Revising and updating the content
The TPC content is continually refined to stay relevant and engaging. Recent significant revisions have focused on updating the ISS and DSS units, including recording new audio content, and ensuring the material reflects current learning practices. Excitingly, a new topic is also being worked on at the moment on “Learning with AI”, to equip students with modern tools for study and ministry.
The revision process is a collaborative effort, with contributions from experienced lecturers and ministry leaders.
Vanesia To is part of the team facilitating the revision process for the TPC, she shares, “The process has been deeply encouraging. The dedication of volunteers, speakers, and ministry leaders reflects a shared commitment to making theological education widely available. It is wonderful to play a small part in bringing it together.”
Why consider the Timothy Partnership Certificate?
The TPC is an excellent choice for anyone seeking to grow in their faith and ministry skills. Whether you’re a youth leader, starting an MTS apprenticeship, or simply looking to serve your church more effectively, the certificate offers a strong foundation. It equips students not only with academic knowledge but also with practical tools in ministry and teaching the Bible to others.
